چکیده

A Subvolume-based algorithm for Ultrasound REgistration (SURE) has been developed and tested using artificially deformed in vivo ultrasound scans. SURE works in two stages, using MIAMI Fuse[1-2] software to determine a global, affine registration in the first stage before iteratively dividing the volume into subvolumes and computing local rigid registrations in the second stage. Connectivity of the entire volume is ensured by global interpolation using thin-plate splines (TPSs). To simulate sequential scans, a random nonlinear deformation was applied and both correlated and uncorrelated noise was added to 20 image volumes, each reconstructed from 60 to 120 evenly spaced Bscan slices. Registration using SURE reduced the average displacements of 1.5 and 2.0 mm in the artificially deformed volumes to 0.20 and 0.27 mm, respectively. Registration times were below 5 min on a 500 MHz CPU for an average data set size of

Backward-Warping Ultrasound Reconstruction for Improving Diagnostic Value and Registration

Freehand 3D ultrasound systems acquire sets of B-Mode ultrasound images tagged with position information obtained by a tracking device. For both further processing and clinical use of these ultrasound slice images scattered in space, it is often required to reconstruct them into 3D-rectilinear grid arrays. We propose new efficient methods for this so-called ultrasound spatial compounding using ...

OF ENGINEERING 3 D Freehand Ultrasound : Reconstruction and Spatial Compounding

A dissertation submitted to the University of Cambridge for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy. Summary In 3D freehand ultrasound, a position sensor is attached to a conventional ultrasound probe so that a set of 2D B-scans are acquired along with their relative locations. This allows the set of B-scans to be reconstructed into a regular 3D voxel array for visualisation and analysis. This thesi...

Elevational spatial compounding for enhancing image quality in echocardiography

INTRODUCTION Echocardiography is commonly used in clinical practice for the real-time assessment of cardiac morphology and function. Nevertheless, due to the nature of the data acquisition, cardiac ultrasound images are often corrupted by a range of acoustic artefacts, including acoustic noise, speckle and shadowing. Spatial compounding techniques have long been recognised for their ability to ...

3-D Compounding of B-Scan Ultrasound Images

Two applications of volume registration in 3-D ultrasound imaging, extended volume imaging (EVI) and 3-D Spatial compounding, are demonstrated both in phantom and clinical scans. Extended volumes were composed by obtaining partly overlapping scans, registering the overlapping volumes, and displaying the complete set of volumes in their relative spatial orientations as determined by the registra...

A Novel Subsampling Method for 3D Multimodality Medical Image Registration Based on Mutual Information

Mutual information (MI) is a widely used similarity metric for multimodality image registration. However, it involves an extremely high computational time especially when it is applied to volume images. Moreover, its robustness is affected by existence of local maxima. The multi-resolution pyramid approaches have been proposed to speed up the registration process and increase the accuracy of th...
